As the third oldest city in Illinois, Edwardsville traces its modern roots back to when it was incorporated in 1818. The first settler in the area, Thomas Kirkpatrick,named the city after a friend and territorial governor Ninian Edwards. Early industry in the city was made up of clay mining, flourmills, and brick manufacturing. Edwardsville became a center for commerce, as there were as many as 5 railroads that came through the area.
